As a dietary supplement, it is indicated for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, spine, hand, and other joints. It can also help with rheumatoid arthritis, sports injuries, migraines, psoriasis, vascular issues (such as atherosclerosis), kidney stones, and inflammatory bowel illness (e.g., ulcerative colitis, leaky gut syndrome).
Glucosamine is a naturally occurring amino-sugar that is created by the body and found in a variety of meals. It's the most basic building component for glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) like Hyaluronic Acid, Keratan Sulfate, and Chondroitin Sulfate production. GAGs bond to proteins to create proteoglycans, which are an important component of articular cartilage. Osteoarthritis develops when cartilage in a joint deteriorates. It also assists in the formation of ligaments, tendons, nails, and other connective tissues. When we take a supplement containing artificially generated Glucosamine Sulfate, our body's Glucosamine levels rise, making cartilage formation and repair easier. Glucosamine also stimulates the production of GAGs and proteoglycans by chondrocytes in cartilage.
Chondroitin Sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan (acid muco polysaccharide) present in connective tissue, particularly in all animals' articular cartilage. Chondroitin Sulfate is similar to Glucosamine Sulfate in that it also works as a proteoglycan substrate. Chondroitin also protects healthy cartilage from premature deterioration by inhibiting the MMP (Matrix metalloproteinase) enzyme, which breaks down proteoglycans.
When glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are taken together, they have a synergistic effect. This combination has been demonstrated to be particularly successful in severe cases of Osteoarthritis, treating both the signs and symptoms of the disease while also slowing down the advancement of the condition. In healthy adults, it helps to avoid osteoarthritis. It is as effective as NSAIDs in treating osteoarthritis pain, but with much greater tolerability and clinical compliance. It also aids in the recovery of musculoskeletal soft tissue injuries such tendon or ligament strains.
250/200 mg tablet: 1 to 2 tablets, three times daily. Dose may be adjusted according to the response of the drug and body weight. Doses can be tapered after 60 days as per requirement of the individual and for cost convenience. Typical dosage recommendation, based on body weight is as follows-
750/600 mg tablet: 1 tablet two times daily or as directed by the physician.
Antibiotics, antidepressants, antihypertensives, nitrates, antiarrythmics, anxiolytics, hypoglycemic drugs, antisecretives, and antiasthmatics have all been reported to have substantial pharmacological interactions with glucosamine and chondroitin. Chondroitin may help anticoagulants like Warfarin and Heparin thin the blood more effectively.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin have no known contraindications. However, documented hypersensitivity to Glucosamine and Chondroitin (e.g., allergies to shellfish or sulfur) is a contraindication.
There have been no negative effects reported in research using Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin Sulfate. Side effects that occur infrequently (such as mild and reversible intestinal flatulence) are practically identical to placebo.
Supplementing with Glucosamine Sulfate or Chondroitin Sulfate is not recommended for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. The effects of glucosamine and chondroitin on a growing fetus have not been thoroughly researched. Glucosamine and Chondroitin use during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been studied. During pregnancy and nursing, it should be used with caution and medical advice.
When taking Glucosamine, patients with Diabetes Mellitus should test their blood glucose levels on a regular basis. In patients with renal or hepatic impairment, no special studies were conducted. For these patients, the toxicological and pharmacokinetic profiles of Glucosamine and Chondroitin show no restrictions. Patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment, on the other hand, should be administered under medical care. Glucosamine and Chondroitin should not be given to children.
