Carisoprodol

Indications

• The alleviation of discomfort associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal problems in adults is what carisoprodol is used for.
• In individuals with severe pain, sedation and anxiety reduction are beneficial.
• Injuries are treated with it as an adjuvant to physical therapy.

Pharmacology

Carisoprodol is a CNS chloride channel conductance effecting GABA-A receptor indirect agonist. GABA receptor agonists usually have a sedative impact, but they can also have anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties. Carisoprodol's metabolite, Meprobamate, has anxiolytic and sedative effects. Carisoprodol inhibits the transmission of nerve impulses from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles. As a result, the muscle relaxes and the spasm subsides. It has no effect on muscle directly.

Dosage & Administration

Adults (18 years and older): The recommended dose of Carisoprodol is 250 mg three times daily and at bedtime (4 times daily). The recommended maximum duration of Carisoprodol use is up to two or three weeks. Caution should be taken in patients with renal and hepatic impairment and also with reduced CYP2C19 activity.

Interaction

• Carisoprodol should be used with caution in patients who are taking other CNS depressants (such as alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids, or tricyclic antidepressants).
• Carisoprodol exposure may be enhanced if CYP2C19 inhibitors (omeprazole, fluvoxamine) are used together. When CYP2C19 inducers (Rifampin) are used with carisoprodol, the exposure to arisoprodol may be reduced.

Contraindications

Patients having a history of acute intermittent porphyria or a hypersensitivity reaction to a carbamate such as meprobamate should avoid carisoprodol.

Side Effects

Drowsiness, dizziness, and headache are common adverse effects.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Category C pregnancy. Carisoprodol usage by mothers may result in decreased or ineffective baby feeding (due to drowsiness) and/or decreased milk supply. When giving Carisoprodol to a pregnant or breastfeeding woman, use caution.

Precautions & Warnings

Because of its sedative effects, it may impede one's ability to conduct potentially dangerous jobs like driving or operating machinery. When used with other CNS depressants, such as alcohol, it has additive sedative effects. Drug Dependence, Withdrawal, and Abuse Cases Seizures
